Revlon Royal= Disappointment

Ugh....

So, I skipped this color when it came out last year.. It got a lot of hype and I thought it was an amazing shade and I loved all the swatch pics I was seeing... I still skipped on it because for some reason it was not singing to me. Not long ago I saw a post that had used this polish and that single post did me in and I had to have Royal. I was all OMFGWOWAMAZING when I saw this swatch pic.... So I ran out and picked up myself a bottle of Royal .....
While the finished result with the Red Angel (plate RA109) stamping in Nfu. OH #61 is really actually quite beautiful.... This base color by Revlon was an absolute nightmare to apply. I needed FOUR.... Yes.. FOUR coats and it was still uneven, streaky and not up to my standards. Thank goodness for stamping and being able to cover up "my sins" with the lacey holographic flowers. There almost an Asian inspired look to it so I'm not mad at the end result...

What I am mad at is this (*points at swatch*)... It just doesn't look as perfect and smooth as I would like.. This really was a PAIN to apply. I've never had a polish be more problematic than Royal. If you are not patient, experienced or.. PATIENT... DO NOT get this color. This color has a streaky, runny almost watery formula.... Not happy with it at all.... I don't even know how this color got some much hype when the formula is such a mess... If only the beauty of the color matched the formula....
Maybe it was just my bottle... But who knows. I don't own many Revlon polishes and this will be the one and only Jelly I ever get from Revlon. This experience was enough to put me off Revlon jellies for the rest of my polish days....

Do you own Royal? Did you have the same issues?

Hello Cris,

sadly we don't have revlon over here, but the color of this is just AWESOME and totally up my alley. Too bad the formula is this evil...

Only thing i have from Revlon is their Quick Dry Top Coat, which I love.

Thanks for sharing!

Great mani!!
I love it!
I'd pujt a clear blue under it to avoid this problem I think!!

Sorry to hear you had problems with the polish. But the end result is AMAZING. I think the combo is perfect.

this is gorgeous!

Oh man it must have been a ROYAL pain in the ass! Sorry for the bad pun, I couldn't resist.

Sucks to hear that this polish was a disappointment to you. It sure looks lovely! Esp the stamping!

I also have one Revlon. Blue Lagoon I think. It's a light blue shimmer. I bought it for some Easter nail art I was planning on. I did some holiday nails, snowman face on the thumbs and the light blue on the other nails. I did't like the formula either. It looked pretty bubbly and took a few coats. It was better after I free hand painted snowflakes on them. I thought maybe I didn't wait long enough to apply another coat or something. After hearing your exp, maybe it is their formula and that light blue is the only Revlon I ever buy as well.

First off, love the mani!!! Perfect stamp design and colour combo. Second, my Royal has a pretty good formula, esp. for a revlon. Two coats was really even good coverage, esp. for a jelly. maybe you did get a bung bottle. Have you noticed the odd smell of the polish though? That's what really bugs me! It smells weird even after it's dried and my fingers repulse while I'm wearing it!!

I honestly think it was your bottle, I have it and absolutely love it. The only time I had to apply more than 2 coats was when I dinged it or something.

Sara said...

My Royal is the same as yours. Sucks so bad! It also smells like something died in the bottle. Mine was chipping within hours. Too bad b/c it was so pretty.

It looks like you may have gotten a rotten bottle, because I have Royal and it's been nothing but regal with me ;) I don't recall how many coats I used, so I went back and read my post on it and it was good in 2 but I added a 3rd. Mine also looks a little deeper in color than yours as well. Sorry you had a bummer experience with this beauty :(

i've had the same problems! PLUS it chips in huge pieces and ridiculously quickly, like later the same day, AND it stains my cuticles. I bought it fairly recently too, so maybe there was a bad batch.

I think you got a bad bottle - mine is great! 2 coats is perfect. I feel like mine might look a little darker than yours too.

SeeSarahSwatch said...

how weird!! I use Royal for frankening all the time, and it's also one of my top 20 polishes.. I've never had a formula problem. In fact, it's always good in 2 coats! IMHO, you got a bad bottle:/

ChromaCraze said...

It looks light in color? Is that one coat? I do two..you can see mine here with flakes http://chromacraze.blogspot.com/2012/01/i-flaked-out.html

My formula is fine and just as nice as the other Revlon polishes I own. I think maybe you got a bad one. It's not supposed to be a gel. Sorry you had so much trouble with it. I LOOVE this polish and have to stop myself from using it over and over, lol!

Revlons are hit or miss for me. I've historically had problems with them drying. BUT, with that being said, Royal is one of my very favorite polishes, and I've never had issues with the formula. If I'm wearing it alone, it just takes two coats for perfect coverage. I also use it to layer a lot, and when I do that I just use one coat.

I'm sorry that it caused you problems. I absolutely love Royal. =\

I think it came out really nice! But I hear you on the patience part. haha. I have none. I own Royal, but I have never used it.

I bought Revlon - Blue Lagoon last spring and I think it is probably the single worse nail polish I own. I had the same problems you seemed to have with your Revlon. That was the last and first time I used Blue Lagoon, and I plan to stay away from Revlon from now on. But, your nails really do look gorgeous!!

I think that is a beautiful color and combo! Must get me some holo polish!!!!!!!
Thanks for sharing!

The holo stamping is awesome. I would have never imagined Nfu Oh 61 stamped that well :-)

Too bad you had those issues with application! I have Essence Cool & The Gang which is a dupe for this one.

Mine looked EXACTLY like this on its own. I've found it's excellent for topping off blue-toned jelly sandwiches though.

I have Royal, and it doesn't look like this at all! Mine is so dark on the nail that it is almost navy!
It's a royal blue in the bottle, but it dries down to a matte navy blue for some reason.

I have to step in and stand up for Revlon's, guys. I own at least 10 Revlon polishes, and I haven't had a problem with application or drying with any of them. I don't know if Whimsical classifies as a jelly, but that had a very nice formula despite needing many, many coats to be opaque.(The nature of the type of polish it is, IMHO.) Maybe the problem has to do with the "Top Speed" ingredients? They may have added some stuff in there to "speed up" things which messed with the overall polish.

4 coats - not worth it. I have at least 1 China Glaze that are close in shade to Revlon Royal already. But agree - I surely do see R. Royal buzzed about/used a lot in blogs. Glad to know it was not a good formula - least what is out there now. I so very much want the Barry M Indigo (and Cobalt too). Of cream basic blues, that one still keeps haunting me. I think there is 1 place in the US that sells it, cannot recall who. Postage from Barry M in Gr. Br. is higher than it should be when I contacted them direct.

I own several Revlon polishes and don't have any problems...but they are metallics and "suede" finish polishes-and they are some of my faves. Sorry about this one. Your Holo stamping looks FABULOUS!!!!

There MUST be some bad bottles out there. Mine is one of my favorites, like others have said, it's much darker and great in 2 coats. So sorry yours is not that way, but I love the holo stamp.

The good news is your nails look gorgeous! The tips actually look like they're kinda glowing haha. I'm going to have to try stamping with some of my Nfu-Oh's now that I know it looks so pretty!

I'm thinking your got a bad egg bottle of Royal as well. I have used mine numerous times and I don't need more than 2 coats, 3 tops if I'm being sloppy. It's a shame, because I really love this polish!

Kyle said...

This ROYAL was one of my favorite colors when it first came out, I waited and waited for it to come on sale finally it did and I got it. As well so disappointed with it, never comes out nice for me and I never use this polish again. Sad, so STILL looking for the perfect Royal blue.

Roblove said...

I'm sorry to hear some of you are disappointed. If you're looking for a perfect royal blue - the most perfect royal blue jelly is Orly Royal Navy. It has delicate hidden 'glass-flecky' shimmer. I love it and the formula is perfect.

It looks GREAT! So your patience was worth it.

I love the nails!!! I must agree...I have a lot of Revlons but find the most problems with the Top Speeds. It's something about them that makes them hard to deal with. But again...your nails look great!!! (:

HelloPaola said...

That's so strange..maybe they have a new formula with their more recent batch, because I have this too and in two coats, it's completely solid. I'm so sad.

I like Revlon polishes for the most part, but their Fragment of Fuchsia is hands down my least favorite nail polish EVER. I guess every once in awhile they put out some duds:(

Ok... so I was at CVS tonight getting a new bottle of polish remover and I saw they had Revlon polishes buy one get one half off. I saw a bottle of Royal and even after having read this post I thought I should give it a try. And girl... you definitely got a bad bottle. I do not ever wanna take this polish off. It is the perfect shade of royal blue, darker than yours too. It looks like that blue on the blue and white asian vases and china. And perfect in two coats. I could have done just one on a few of my nails. It isn't a creme for sure, but much more opaque than other jellies I have. I just love it.

My only problem was I at first used Out the Door topcoat on it and was weirdly matte in patchy spots. But I put a coat of seche on top and it is smooth as glass. Actually it kind of does look like a blue glass bottle. Kind of glows. I think you should get another bottle and retry it.

I own Royal myself and have never had a problem with streaking. What base coat did you use? I use OPI NATURAL NAIL BASE COAT every time I polish my nails it prevents staining and helps even crappy polish apply nicely. I bet you got a bad bottle. It looks fabulous what polish did you use for the stamping?
